Should I Repair or Replace My HVAC System?

AC Unit

Amid this New Jersey summer heat, you want to make sure your air conditioner can keep up.– If your AC can’t beat the heat, would it benefit from some repairs, or should you replace it altogether?  When your AC isn’t working, let Air Experts help you make the right decision.

Factors to Consider Before Repairing or Replacing Your HVAC System

When deciding to repair or replace your HVAC system, consider these six factors– age of the system, repair costs, repair frequency, problems, efficiency, and size.

Age

Older units are less efficient and come with higher repair costs. If your system is more than eight years old, replacing the system might be more beneficial. If your HVAC system is less than eight years old, it can easily be repaired.

Repair Costs

When it comes to repairs, our techs recommend using the 5k rule. Take the age of your system and multiply it by the cost of the repairs. If the amount is less than $5,000, repairing would be more cost-effective than replacing. If it is more than $5,000, it might be time to replace it. Luckily, we offer up-front pricing and financing options for your new system.

Repair Frequency

If your air conditioner had less than two minor repairs in the last ten years, it could still be fixed with some more repairs. Consider replacing it if your system had some major repairs recently and still isn’t working. Our techs at Air Experts can give you a free in-home estimate and install your new AC unit in just one day!

Problems

If your air conditioner needs an easy repair, like replacing the capacitor or fixing a drain line, it’s worth repairing it. If the blower motor, compressor or condenser stop working, replacing the entire system is the best option.

Efficiency

If your HVAC system has a SEER rating greater than 13, it is still efficient and may be worth repairing. Systems with a rating of less than 13 should be replaced to help bring down cooling costs.

Size

Systems that aren’t sized correctly to fit your home are prone to premature failure. If your system is not the right size for your home, it is worth replacing with one that better suits your home.
